Pick of the Week #4: Bruce Peninsula

Bruce Peninsula's A Mountain is a Mouth was my pick of the week.

The executive summary:
The album is like spending 40 mins inside a haunted country church, (which is to say that AMIAM is an experience... and there are very few bands that can create an experience).

I'm going to check them tonight at the Horseshoe, so, probably a review and some photos tomorrow...

Annuals w/ Jessica Lee Mayfield @ El Mocambo Jan.24.2009

I saw Annuals and Jessica Lee Mayfield @ El Mocambo w/ my buddy Mr. Grosman on Saturday night.

The executive summary:
Jessica Lee Mayfield = much better than expected, great voice, interesting song writing, looking forward to hearing the album.

Annuals = great sounding band with lead vocals that were a little too emo for me.

The photos and the whole review here.

Neko Case Download for Best Friends Animal Society

Don't ask me how this works, but Anti - the record label - is making a $5 donation to the Best Friends Animal Society for every blog that posts the new single "People Got A lotta Nerve" from Neko Case's upcoming album Middle Cyclone.

I did. And, while I'm not an uber-animal activitst or anything (although I was step-father to a fish once -RIP Roy) it seems like a good thing to do... so you should do it too...

Noah's Arkweld @ Supermarket

Noah Mintz is possibly more well known for his CD mastering work with Lacquer Channel Mastering than he was with his previous band hHead. I don't mean that as a knock against hHead, what I'm saying is that if you check the liner notes of your CDs, you'll come across his name. Repeatedly. His credits include Broken Social Scene, Wintersleep, Die Mannequin, Constantines, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Stars, The National, and on and on. As a result, he's very active in the music community, and so it was no surprise that the Supermarket was not only packed with friends but also many musicians when he held a CD release party for his new album, Names For Shapes That Don't Exist.

Pick of the Week #1: Ketch Harbour Wolves (Rob)/The Tranzac (Jen)

1. Let me take the opportunity to tell you how great it feels to be a syndicated columnist... it feels great.... really really, great (it should be noted that any future reading of "great... really really, great" should be read as Toby from Seinfeld - the heckler who Jerry heckles back in "The Fire").

2. You know what else is great... really really, great? Ketch Harbour Wolves and their debut EP Dead Calm Horizon.

3. They sound like, I think, a really cool combination between this year's it band Fleet Foxes and the under appreciated Scottish band Frightened Rabbit (who you might note is one of Allan's favs). The EP, which is a total of 7 songs, is incredibly solid from beginning to end, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a wasted minute in the 28 minute (29 if you round up) recording... which, sadly, makes it a minute too short to be eligible for the Polaris Prize.

4. It was 1c on my Best Albums of '08, but I'm definitely not alone in thinking they are... wait for it... great... really really, great. It was Herohill's favourite EP of the year, i(heart)music's favourite recording of the year, and Sean from Everything is Pop recently sent me a note thanking me for the recommendation. Basically, people who like music really like this album, and I think each of us had a different favourite song - or at least posted a different song.

5. I went to go see them live last Saturday and were good, not great, just a little messy in spots. And I felt terrible about writing that since: a) I really think the band is terrific; b) I typically feel really bad about saying bad things about small bands; c) I don't want to discourage anyone from going to see them, because they are still worth seeing, and d) Jon (from the band) sent me an email after I posted the review thanking me for writing a fair and "even handed review". That said, I now think: e) Jon and the guys are pretty chilled out and seem like really good dudes, and; f) are on their way to be a formidable live band, which, I suspect will be a chilling live experience once it all comes together.

6. The most insane thing? They're giving their entire EP away for free.

7. At the show I bought a t-shirt and its really slick. American Apparel black with shiny-metallic gold lettering gold and logo (to the best of my knowledge they're not available anywhere on-line). Awesome. Now all I need is metallic gold pants to wear it with.

8. My two favourites:

"So Long to the Ground" and "Letters" (for mp3s go here).

Jen's Pick

This weekend I'm recommending the Tranzac Club. On Friday, there's a semi-formal dress Rock 'n' Roll Anniversary in the Main Hall with Mantler, Gravity Wave, and Wax Mannequin. Or else Nick Rose and The Stables in the front room. Come Saturday, spend the afternoon with Hexes & Ohs, Winter Gloves, Green Go, Sports: The Band, and Maylee Todd. Amazing! And at night celebrate Out of This Spark's anniversary with the record label's artists, including Forest City Lovers, The D'Urbervilles, Timber Timbre, and Jenny Omnichord. Pretty much anything going on at Tranzac this week, and every week, will add goodness to your musical diet, and will leave you feeling superior, like you're in on a well-kept secret. The Tranzac is a musician's venue more than any other place.

Podcast 23 (7-11 Jan 2009).

Katie Stelmanis ("In My Favour"), The Lovely Killbots ("Little Shape"), The Stables ("Darkness [demo]"), Gravity Wave ("Buffalo Jump"), Hexes & Ohs ("Head Over Heels [Tears for Fears cover]"), and Gregory Pepper & His Problem ("It Must Be True").

Next week: special musician guest(s)! Get excited!

My favourite things, 2008.

I've got my list of favourite things up on my blog. Bands, shows, people, albums, and other indie music-related awesomeness.

Indie Music 64 (5-11 Jan 2009).

Hey all, I got my listings for this week up on my blog. Enjoy!

So how was everyone's New Year's Eve? I celebrated at the Tranzac w/ Ronley Teper & her Lipliners, Ghost Bees, the Sweatshop Hop, I am Robot & Proud, The Bicycles, and Steamboat. Friday I went to see Amos the Transparent and Whale Tooth at Rancho. Excellent show. Wavelength last night was good too: The Owle Bird and Chris Yang, who did a great cover of Magnetic Field's "The Book of Love." It was nice to see such good-sized crowds and good moods at all these shows. Hopefully 2009 continues like this!

At Tranzac this month, Monday's in the Tiki Room as curated by Thom Gill, whom you may know from various projects, including Katie Stelmanis's band. (She's playing an early set at Lee's on Wednesday which will put you back but $2.) Wombat Wednesdays are back, this time curated by Dwight Schenk. The first show features The Schomberg Fair. If you're not down with the lineup, perhaps you'd prefer Boxes & Bags and The Lovely Killbots in the front room. Friday night The Stables have a gig in the front room, too, and I've got high expectations of awesomeness. In the main hall that night help Chris Eaton (of Rock Plaza Central) celebrate his wedding anniversary with a party featuring Wax Mannequin and Gravity Wave. Come Saturday you'll want to spend the entire day at Tranzac: Winter Gloves and Hexes & Ohs are in town from Montreal, along with Sports: The Band, Green Go, and Maylee Todd for an afternoon launch party in the Mail Hall. In the evening, help Out of This Spark records celebrate its anniversary with top-notch acts Forest City Lovers, The D'Urbervilles, Timber Timbre, and Jenny Omnichord. I'll be there.

Elsewhere around town, this week is another jam-packed indie smorgasbord, with all kinds of options for those of us without a lot of extra cash. Highlights include Machetes' release show at the Drake on Wednesday (for free); Andrew DeVillers, Jetset Motel, and Terror Lake at the Rivoli on Thursday; a solid hardcore lineup including Aids Wolf at the Boat, also on Thursday; Beekeepers Society and The Paper Makers at the Silver Dollar Room on Friday; The Miles w/ Heartbeat Hotel at the Drake on Friday; The Creeping Nobodies, Teenanger, and Romo Roto at Cervejaria on Saturday; and a solid 4-band bill at the Horseshoe on Saturday. Sunday is Wavelength day, at least for me. See below for all the details about these and a whole lot of other shows.

Ketch Harbour Wolves @ El Mocambo, Jan. 3.09.

I saw Ketch Harbour Wolves last night.

Their album, which is free, is outstanding. Like really, really, good.
Their live show was good, but probably has some catching up to do.

Full commentary here.

Hope you like our picks!

Welcome to 2009!!

Since the rest of this blog's contributors are likely hung over and still asleep, (just kidding guys. unless that's exactly what you're doing, in which case, I'm deadly serious...) I'll kick off the '09 with my personal links to some year end best of's and whatnots:

My Albums of 2008 (featuring local picks by Quest For Fire, RAA, Golden Hands and Born Ruffians)

My Songs of 2008 (featuring local picks by Entire Cities and Ruby Coast)

And my Shows of 2008 (featuring local picks by Cuff The Duke, Bruce Peninsula and $100)

Also, to get the year started off right, I've just posted my personal recommendations for what to see in the month of January.

Hope your 2008 was enjoyable and relatively painless, and hopefully your 2009 is even better.
